Trail Marker
Volcanoe National Park (Big Island), Hawaii - December 29th, 2000

Jeff, Dave, Maria, Lisa, and I boarded the Hawaiian Airlines plane and flew to the Big Island. We flew by other islands like Mau and Molokai, which looked beautiful in the air.

Lei Lana picked us up at the airport and also picked up Pakate and Hassan before dropping us off at the trailhead an hour away. We started our hike at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park's Ka'ena Point on the Puna Coast Trail. One really cool thing I noticed right away was that the trails are marked by a small pile of volcanic rocks, topped by a sun-bleached coral.

We arrived at Apua Point after a 6.6 mile hike (10.6 km) on our heavy packs. The scenery to Apua Point was spectacular. It must be what it's like to be on the surface of the moon - the grounds were bare of vegetations. Choke full of different volcanic rocks covered most of the trail. After a delicious curry dinner, we chilled out and watched the stars.
