June 21, 2001 - Thursday - Krabi to Rai Lay Beach, Thailand

Long Boat from Krabi to Rai Lay Beach

We had breakfast at our hotel and got on the long boat to go to Rai Lay beach. Michael couldn't find his ferry ticket so we sat for like 15 minutes staring at the driver before he decided to take us anyway. He found the ticket later in his pocket, which made me give him the nickname of Blondie for being such a ditz. The long boat ride was OK - the waves were very choppy but the scenery was beautiful.

Rai Lay Beach

There were giant pillars of lime stone rocks jetting out of the emerald sea. Green vegetation covered the tops of the rocks, tapering off as the sheer cliff side and the elements prevent anything from establishing any footholds. It looked like a lot of the scenes from the movie The Beach.

We soon arrived at Rai Lay Beach and hopped into a restaurant. Michael and Grant went to scout around for a place to stay while Dirk and I waited. The trio has given each other nicknames already and I found out Michael's nickname is Private, while Grant's was Sergeant and Dirk's is the Wizard. So far, Dirk did not come across as being anything wizardry.

I started to really enjoy their company and it pretty much banished all my homesick feelings. We eventually found these rooms at Ya Ya's Bungalows and checked in. After we moved into our rooms, we went to hunt for some food.

Michael at CoCo's. Grant and I put together the text.

As you can see from the picture above, Michael developed a reputation of asking really stupid questions, barrowing other people's things and losing them.

Michael suggested we go to a place called Co Co's - he assumed that because the place looked run-down, the food must be cheap and good. When we first got there, we sat down on this creaky table. An uninspired waiter brought us menus that stank like Michael's pants.

When Michael ordered a mixed fruit lassie, the waiter informed us that they lost electricity at the premise so they can't make it. After a quick discussion among us, we decided to go back to our hotel's restaurant and eat there. I had the Pad Thai, which was very tasty.

We were all busting Michael on his selection of Co Co's during lunch and for the rest of the day. It was good fun and he took it in strides. We went to the beach after that and it wasn't much of a beach. The beach was made of brown sand and some mud with strong pounding waves and strong wind that reminded of those dreary Bermuda winters.

Michael went for a swim while I explore the various tidal pools while Grant and Dirk sat and read books. After dinner, we went out to see a fire show at Diamond's Bar and drank some buckets of rum and coke and some weird mix of mixed drinks and beer. My head was buzzing after a while and had to head home while Grant and Michael continued to drink.
