April 22, 2001 - Sunday - Fraser Island to Hervey Bay

An interlude while waiting for the tide to receed - Fraser Island - Queensland, Australia

I finally got up and couldn't find any food at the camp and ate some bread and Nutella. We eventually broke camp and headed south again. We had to stop at the beach because the tide was still high so people stood around to play Frisbee while I explored the shoreline. James the idiot went in for a swim but to everyone's dismay, a shark didn't eat him.

Tony falling into Eli Creek - Fraser Island - Queensland, Australia

On the way back, we stopped by Eli Creek and a bunch of people floated down the crystal clear, butt freezing, bone chilling water. The waterway meandered through a shallow sandy bottom through reeds and trees. Large eels and small fish could also be seen. Stuart almost smacked Joerg for reaching into his pants pocket for the car key while Stuart's hands were full.

We continued south and I drove for a segment and so did Sandra. Joerg wanted to drive but I think nobody wanted him to drive. He finally did drive for a bit but every time when the 4WD swerved, Cassandra let out a loud shriek. She had a terrifying look in her eyes as she gripped Graham's hand tightly. We stopped by Happy Valley again to return Jame's fishing pole that he didn't really use. We found out later that he didn't know there was a safety latch to release before you could cast the line.

We thought about going to Lake Mckenzie but decided to go to Lake Wabby because we haven't been there yet. The drive there was actually a little treacherous but we managed to make it without any problem. People started eating whatever they could find as our food supply started to run low. Joerg was treating our food box as a all-you-can-eat buffet.

Group #3's Dingo'ed 4WD - Lake Wabby - Fraser Island - Queensland, Australia

Eventually, we got to Lake Wabby and parked. We found group #3's truck parked there also so we smeared some soap stuff on their window and sprayed the windshield with the phrase "you've been dingo'ed". It didn't take us far to walk before we bumped into group #3 heading back to their truck.

We said hi to them but realized that they will probably retaliate while we're down at the lake. They've been playing tricks on us in the past 2 days so this was the first chance we were able to get back at them. We went on ahead anyway and the lake was a deep green with turtles and tall sand hills. There were people tumbling down the sand hill and swimming but I just sat and watched because the water was way too cold.

After staying there for a while, we headed back and at first, it looked like that they only threw an egg on the windshield, but there were more devious traps hidden for us. They smeared Nutella under the door handles so when you put your hand under the handle to lift it up, it gets on your fingers. They also tied a rope to the wheel and the other end to a large log, but they buried the rope so you couldn't really see it.

While we all loved Tony, we didn't love him enough to die with him while he negotiate the tricky potholes - Fraser Island - Queensland, Australia

It was Jen's keen eyes that spotted the trap and we disarmed that as well. We headed to the ferry dock after that and as soon as we got there, we ate the rest of the fruits and I was reduced to eating bread with butter and sugar. There were these small fly things that kept biting us, even with the repellent and the ferry finally stopped by to save us.

The ugly hunched back woman came out of the ferry again and yelled at everyone to get on the ferry and we slowly headed back to Hervey Bay after that. There were a few dolphins jumping in the water as we approached the other side of the ferry dock, but nothing else interesting happened.

Tidal flats exposed from receeded tide - Fraser Island - Queensland, Australia

We got back to the hostel without any further incidents and Matt cooked some potato dishes for everyone but it wasn't enough. It was fairly tasty though. I ended up buying a veggie burger afterward. Most of the Fraser group hung out outside the bar and we chatted late into the night.

Graham and I ended up in a toilet paper fight, which was a lot of fun. Cassandra sang some nice songs while both Graham and Anna showed us their incredible long tongues. I met a Danish plumber in the dorm and will hope to hook up with him when I get to Denmark.
