April 21, 2001 - Saturday - Fraser Island

We broke camp early today among drizzling rain and wind and ate a cold breakfast before packing up and heading north again. The skies cleared up eventually as we traveled north. We stopped by Happy Valley, which looked a little depressing with small run-down shops and ill-kept sand roads. After getting some ice for our coolers, we headed north again.

The next place we stopped was at the shipwreck where a skeletal remains of a ship sits on the shore. Its metal frames erode away as the waves pounds it mercilessly. There were small bi-planes landing on the beach to view the wreck also, which was a little weird. I caught a curious looking crab where its front and back legs have been modified and flattened so it could easily dig a hole in the wet sand.

We departed and headed up north again and passed Cathedral Point and up further to (missing location name) for a short lunch break and gather firewood, and a much needed hot shower. We headed off again after that and headed up to Indian Head for our campsite. There were a lot of campers at this campground but we managed to find one close to the shore along side of group #3.

After setting up our tents, it took us a while to get going to the Champaign Pools because Tony and James went off to the sand dune to play Frisbee and the rest of the group went looking for them and stayed there for a while.

Eventually, we headed toward the pools after locating them. The pools turned out to be just a bunch of large tidal pools with sandy bottoms so people can just soak and swim there. There were some interesting critters and fish there, but nothing too exciting or exotic from what I've seen so far.

We hung around there for a few hours and even I joined in on the Frisbee game and got wet a bit. We were picking up gobs of wet sand and throwing it at each other and eventually, I was chasing and being chased by Graham, who was pretty persistent in chasing me down.

We went back to the camp and a few of us went up on Indian Head to get a sweeping view of the area. It is also a good spot to spot sharks and I saw 3 of them swimming not far from the shoreline. When I got back to camp, Joerg was trying to give out orders again but nobody listened to him again. The group was already tired of Joerg after just one day. Eventually, he convinced Matt to give him some hash so he could make cookies for the group. Graham made spaghetti with some sort of meat sauce but there wasn't enough to go around and eventually I ended up supplementing it with Nutella and bread.

James, the weirdo appeared at the camp just in time for dinner and he ate a cookie without asking, then he got a bowl of food and added a packet of magic mushroom powder to the food. I'm just a little amazed on the amount of drugs I've seen so far on this trip. Either I was oblivious to what's going on around me, or when I grew up, not much people did drugs at my high school and college.
We set up a campfire with group #3 and we all sat around and talked for a while. James came by and sat next to me and started talking about all the Internet ideas he has. I got really bored and went off to the beach for a walk to get away from him. I went to sleep to the sound of ocean waves and it rained on and off. I got up at 1 and couldn't go back to sleep so I went out to the camp again to join the group. Only 6 people were left and I just sat and observed.
One Brit started making some sculptures in the sand and he did a really funny one of a woman with huge pointy tits and he was digging her hole with his hand, which looked like he was fisting her. It was pretty funny actually.
