February 7, 2001 Wednesday - Franzjosef to Makarora

| Lake Matherson, New Zealand |
The bus ride to Makarora was uneventful and short. I don't know why we didn't go all the way to Queenstown. We stopped by Lake Matherson where we walked through a lush fern-covered trail to the lake. It's suppose to be the best, most photographed place in New Zealand, but our viewpoint was covered by some high cloud so we couldn't take any good pictures.
Further more, there was a large group of Taiwanese tourists there. The tour leader had a freakin' loud, obnoxious, typical Taiwanese-bitchy-whining voice that made my blood curl. She was giving out orders and information very loudly and nobody was paying attention to her. I had to run away from there. We stopped by Makarora early in the afternoon and checked in.

Some people went on the Siberia Experience where they fly a small plane to the top of a mountain, hike down, and then take a fast boat ride in the river and do other silly things in the freezing cold. I went for a hike through the temperate forest before taking a shower.
