February 2, 2001 Friday - Turangi to Wellington, New Zealand

Nice view of the Tongariro mountain range, Turangi, New Zealand

We made our way from Turangi toward Wellington this morning. Mike, our new bus driver who looked like a bear but was soft spoken was not too entertaining. The bus trip was actually fairly uneventful. We made a few stops on the way. One of them was at Flat Hill for an early lunch stop.

There were more "activities" for us to participate. This time was driving a speedboat through a small inland course that costs NZ $25. Nobody did the trip. We made another short stop at Palmerson North, a big university town. People bought tickets there and stuff.

I got to know the passenger sitting next to me a little bit. Her name was Kathy and she's from Ireland, traveling with 2 other friends. They are all deaf and I was able to communicate to a small degree with my very limited signing skills.

City view from Mt. Eden - Wellington, New Zealand

We arrived in Wellington by 3:30 that afternoon. The bus driver did do us a favour by taking us to the top of Mt. Victoria for a view of the city of Wellington. We checked into our backpacker after that and it was by far the worst room arrangement yet. The hostel itself was nice enough and the facilities were generally clean. Our room however had a total of 20 beds. Stay away from Downtown Backpacker.
