June 7, 2001 - Thursday - Kuta to Singapore
Singapore and its airport are both ultra-modern and ultra-clean, but the lack of cyber cafes or pub that televises the French Open was a bit annoying. After landing, I took the bus to the MRT station and boarded the subway to Chinatown. I checked into a hostel for S$10 on a sweltering 5th floor. After checking in, I chatted with another backpacker for a while - Chris from Germany.
He has a private room with his own bath and A/C, and was nice enough to offer it to me too and I took it. My body was just drenched in sweat for some reason. It was late in the evening already so we took a quick bite to eat and I took my first hot shower in a few weeks.
June 8, 2001 - Friday - Singapore
I parted company with Chris this morning and checked into a hostel in Little India. After checking in, I went to Sim Lim Square, a huge building that sells nothing but electronics. I decided that the prices in Singapore not any cheaper than the States so I didn't buy anything.
The hostel I stayed in Little India was pretty much a large house partitioned by thin walls to house various people. I wasn't too impressed by it. It was fairly disorganized and I had to keep my packs out until that evening because the owner was painting the walls. He also overbooked the dorm so 2 people had to sleep in the hot kitchen.
I didn't see much of Singapore - I wasn't in the mood for some reason. Singaporeans live to dine out in the hundreds of food courts scattered through out the country, and I had fun checking them out and sampling foods that I have long missed in Taiwan.
