June 19, 2001 - Tuesday - Perhentian Islands to Kota Bharu

Lawrence trying to rehydrate himself.

We bid farewell to Louise today because she's staying on to take her PADI certification course. Lawrence and I caught the 12:00 ferry and we went around various parts of the island picking up people. The only highlight of the boat trip was I saw a small flying fish that jumped out of the water and barely hovered above the surface of the water for at least 20 feet, and it was traveling faster than our ferry. Nobody else saw it though.

I checked in with Lawrence anyway and dropped our stuff off to go find lunch. Jamie and Louise moved into the same hostel so we went out as a group. They decided, to my dismay, to go to McDonalds for lunch but I went along with them anyway. These English needed their fill of fat once in a while as much as they need alcohol. We ordered and sat down to eat the food and as I was eating my chicken, a guy approached and headed straight at me.

Steven showing the social grace of a British gentalman... or a typical Brummie behaviour.

He looked very familiar and he introduced himself (again) and I remembered that it was Stephen, whom I met while hiking in KL. He got a haircut so I didn't really recognize him at first. He sat down and we had a friendly chat together while I ate. I went to Stephen's room after that to have a chat with him and I found him napping in the dark. His hostel lost electricity and water so there wasn't anything he could do except nap in the dark sauna-like dorms.

I chatted with him for a while before heading out together to go find a bookstore. After heading back to the hostel and resting, a large group of us went walking around the night market for a while before getting some food to eat. Stephen ate like an animal though, like he's starving or something. We sat around and chatted and ate for a while before heading back.
