June 11, 2001 - Monday - Sabak Bernam to KL, Malaysia

Shahril's Parents

After getting up this morning and packing up, Shahril's father showed up at the door and took us to the elementary school for lunch. The school actually reminded me of my own school back in Taiwan and a flood of memories came back to me again. We ate the food the staff cooked for themselves, which was very tasty.

I was asking Shahril about the different foods and eyeing it warily again, which made the staff giggle to no ends. There was a huge snakehead fish in a fish tank in the kitchen for some reason. I didn't ask. His parents took us to the bus station after that and we bided them farewell before getting on the bus. I had a "corn drink" while waiting for the bus. I didn't like the idea at first but it was actually not too bad. It was corn juice, mixed probably with water and sugar.

We had a horrible driver going back to KL. He was constantly honking his horn and tailgating any car that's driving slower than him. I had a hard time trying to read my book while riding. After we got to KL, we got off and I checked in again before going down to the restaurant to have a quick bite to eat with Shahril before he heads to JB.

He at least allowed me to pay for the food this time and we bided farewell after that. I took a shower and nap before meeting Sky, a Chinese-Malaysian that I met on the Internet. He took me to Chinatown and bought me some lychee fruits that I haven't had for a long long time.

Sky was very energetic - he walked even faster than I, which is fairly rare. We walked through the night market, through endless stalls of clothing, sunglasses, and VCDs. We finally stopped and ate at a restaurant - barbequed meats along with wonton and dumplings. It was really good and we chatted throughout dinner.

I feel a bit bad for Sky. He's a workaholic and he worked weekdays and weekends nonstop. He rarely takes any vacations and would just keep on working and working. I tired to convince him that he should take it easier and take time to enjoy life and things outside work. I'm not sure if it had any impact.

Afterward, I walked him to the bus station so he could catch his bus to go home and go to work tomorrow. I saw him walk on the bus and really hope something better will come his way.
