Tall Ships, 2000
After a wonderful 10 days in London, in a city full of millions of people, it was a bit of weird coming back to what seemed to be a sparsely populated island. Bermuda is actually one of the top 5 mostly densely populated countries if you want to count the number of people per square mile.
My friends David & Rudi picked me up and we headed straight to the City of Hamilton because the Tall Ships have been in town for a week now and was scheduled to head off to the states for their next leg of the race. We walked through town and got onto a few of the ships to look around. Numerous sailors milled through town, looking for a good time in and out of the bars or just browsing through the stores. At least I got a chance to see the tall ships up close. They were indeed very impressive, towering over most of the buildings in downtown Hamilton.
The next morning Jeff and I hopped onto a sailboat that Jeff sails as a crew on some of the weekends. Monty, the owner, greeted us. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get on because it was a last minute thing but luckily, a few people didn't show up so I got on. We sailed by Hamilton Harbour, by the tall ships. As we sailed away from them, we heard a few cannon fires that signaled the start of the Parade of the Tall Ships along the North Shore. A cruise ship led the way and we hung out at the entrance of the Great Sound and watched them pass on by.
It was actually quite calm that day so most sailboats had a hard time making any progress with sails alone. We followed them out to St. Georges along the North Shore and I was expecting them to sort of line up before the race but they just basically drifted away from each other and headed toward the west.
It was pretty much an anti-climax for the whole thing I thought and we sailed into St. George's Harbour for a swim. We headed back to the dock after that but not after viewing another beautiful sunset off the boat.
