Week of December 22, 1998

My boss Graham took a co-worker and me to an Indian restaurant for lunch last week. The food was not as good as the Indian restaurants in the states and twice as expensive. I guess I will eventually get used to the sticker shock. Most items in Bermuda cost at least 2 to 3 times more than the States. Graham was really nice and picked up the tab. Everyone I met at work so far is really nice, as are other people on the island. Maybe I'm just used to the rude people in the Northeast.

We had our company Christmas party that week. It started with bowling and ended at a restaurant called Tio Pepe's. I didn't know at that time, but it was by far the worst restaurant I've experienced on the island (food-wise). We also had a open-house for the clients Christmas party that was filled with finger foods and sweet treats. I think I had my fill of sweets for the month.

I finally had enough guts to rent a moped for a week. I've never driven one before but it's very similar to riding a bike, except a lot faster. Riding home that night was a little scary, but a lot of fun too, like a roller coaster without the safety straps I guess.

I went to another Christmas party at a friend's friend's house. This house was amazing - a two level 4 bedroom house that over looks the Hamilton Harbour. Large fireplace living room with two Christmas trees, and a beautifully decorated English Kitchen with hanging brass pots and antique pantry furnishings. Past the library, a dining room opened into a very large covered porch that perched on the hillside also overlooks the harbour. A path wound around a beautifully manicured garden past a green house and down to the private dock.

They served a variety of hors d'oeuvres, including sushi and escargot in puff pastry. I had a good time yakking with the host about their recently purchased large track of rainforest in Costa Rica and how they're planning on making it into a nature preserve and build a house to retire in. I also tried a new drink, another Bermudian drink called "Dark and Stormy", ginger beer mixed with Gosling's black rum.

That following weekend, I went into town with a friend I met at the last Christmas party and briefly visited two very small bars. I was told that Friday nights are the bar nights for Bermuda so I guess I will have to try that some night.

After not playing for most of this summer and fall, I was finally able to play tennis on Sunday at the St. George's Club. It has a golf course that over looks the sea and three tennis courts. The area was beautiful, complimented nicely with the warm sunny day. I think I over did it by playing 4 hours of tennis after being mostly inactive for the last 6 months. Two days later, my body was still sore.

I started work at a client site this week - a beautiful small office that's about 4 feet away from the Hamilton Harbour. Large, tall French doors look out into the bay where the sailboats bobbed idly during the day and lights danced around ripples in the water at night.

That's all for now.
