Green Turtle

The Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is the most commonly seen turtle in Bermuda. They are mostly from the Caribbean region, but some are from as far as West Africa. Between 1968 and 1978, 16,000 turtle eggs were brought from Costa Rica. They were hatched and released from Nonsuch Island in hopes of having them return to nest when they reach maturity after 30 years. However, since the incubation temperature of many reptiles' eggs determines the sex of the babies, they may have all been males because of the change in sand temperature between Bermuda and Costa Rica. Currently, only Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta caretta) nest in Bermuda.
