11/2/2009 – Unlike the rest of the islands in the Cook Islands, Atiu is mostly inhabited only around the center of the island high above the sea. Once upon a time, Atiu people moved up the hilly island to get away from hurricane and tsunami threats and never moved back down. As a result, every day when I came down to the beach, I’m the only person there.
